The feeding style is so methodical it reminds me of actual butchery, the lizard carefully carving out its choice cuts (obviously not what happens in the group feeding video, no time for choice cuts there)

Yes the amount of bulking up they do as they transition into adults is substantial.
I've always wondered if it effected the weight average of the animals.
It is also an interesting case of an animal occupying two very different niches over the course of its life.
