Elephant tusks found on a 16th century ship reveal the decline in elephants. Basically, they found genetic evidence of 17 distinct herds from the cargo, but only 4 of those survive today. www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-55340975

^Not suprised. In the inside nature's giant documentaries one of the dissectors noted that hippos had incredibly tough skin that had very small amounts of fat and was far harder to carve into than a whales thick but rather soft blubbery flesh.
