"All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and the big bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of Hell" Big bang and evolution were predictable, but embryology? I guess the stork story can now be taught alongside the Genesis creation myth! It really hurts when even politicians say such things. Particularly when it are even U.S. Representatives…

Relevant: www.culturalcognition.net/blog/2014/4/23/what-you-believe-about-climate-change-doesnt-reflect-what-yo.htmlThe belief in global warming and evolution apparently weakly correlates with comprehension, but strongly with identity. In other words, if you believe in evolution/global warming does not depend on how well you understand it, but on the question if you identify as a nerd or as a conservative. I find this hard to believe, considering how incomprehensibly ignorant most of the denial "arguments" are (e.g. "If humans descend from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?" or "CO2 is plant food! Let's emit as much as possible!"; the latter is even used by politicians who should be expected to do some basic research…). BTW, does anyone know why global warming denialists are mostly found among conservatives? The reason is clear for creationism, but not so much for global warming denialism. I can think of two reasons: 1. Many conservatives adhere to free market ideologies which are at odds with climate friendly policies. 2. "And I will establish my covenant with you, neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth." (Genesis 9:11) This verse was cited by some Republican politicians as "evidence" that there will never be any floods caused by global warming which is odd, since the verse only says God won't flood the Earth in the future, man causing floods is a different story. P.S. Just to make that clear, I don't want to depict conservatives as generally stupid (there are times when liberals have problems with the scientific consensus as well, e.g. GMOs), it's just that I care more about evolution and global warming than the other topics where the public fights the scientific consensus.

Are there any statistics on how many people believe the Earth is flat? Given that about 6-7% of the Americans believe the Moon landings were a hoax and that 4% believe the world is ruled by reptiles, it may not be that small. Why do you think such a flat Earth movement exists at all? I would say an increasing distrust towards science or the government. The fact that this movement is growing is worrisome, but I hope it makes people realize how ludicrous all this anti-intellectualism has become.

^Or just an increasing distrust of brain cells in general?
I agree that it’s worrisome, but at least not as worrisome as some of the other mind-boggling stupidity we see these days. Even in the dark ages a flat earth wasn’t a mainstream view in most parts of the earth (unlike creationism, religious extremism and all sorts of other superstitions). So I doubt the flat earth movement has much growth potential. One really has to wonder, if your understanding of science is

While flat Earthers are religious fanatics most of the time, their prime motivation is not so much a literal interpretation of holy texts (nowadays at least, older organizations like the Flat Earth Society are explicitly religiously motivated), but a general attraction to conspiracy theories. You can see that in the fact that they don't try to evangelize as much as creationists do and are less obsessed with Satan. Rather, they are more obsessed with NASA (which has the role of Satan in their little world) and government in general. Though I have to admit that when they have to rationalize why they believe that the government would even desire to be involved in such an enormous cover up, they usually claim the globe Earth was invented to disprove God. One flat Earther I know even claimed that the government invented the globe to get rid of the dome above Earth in the Bible so that they can claim during the day of the rapture that aliens abducted those whom Jesus raptured. I generally have problems understanding why fundamentalists believe that the people are going to believe such laughable official explanations during the End Times. Do they believe everyone is as dumb as them? Other flattards claim the sphere Earth was invented to facilitate evolution and to disprove God: if you live on a sphere your mother's a monkey and grandparents are apes and your ancestors are gorillas but if the Earth is flat then God created you Anyway, most flat Earthers don't explain at all why the government deceives us so much. Do they just enjoy being evil? P.S. I'm not so sure about the flat Earth never having been a mainstream view. Surely not among educated people, but among simple peasants who never enjoyed education or even literacy it was surely common.

No, we just talk about facts which should be general knowledge, but aren't.

Someone on the old Carnivora's Giganotosaurus vs Ankylosaurus thread seems to think Giga can bite through Anky's armor like potato chips! Read it and you will see...
