They are seperate stories. Then book 3 is a bit weird, as one of the defining features of series with no continuity is that the status quo is preserved (that's why Batman doesn't kill the Joker). Book 3, however, changes the status quo very heavily. Of course, there's a thing such as negative continuity (character dies in episode 11 and is inexplicably alive in episode 13). It is mostly done in comedic works, but it can also work in more serious stories where we simply assume every book takes place in a different universe. Or you have very subtle continuity and Book 3 is simply meant to be the finale.
