It should still be noted that, although condors can sometimes best eagles, golden eagles generally dominate California condors during feeding, for rather predictable reasons. Immature condors have even been killed on occasion by eagles (link).

Presumably for both Condors and late-coming Eagles alike, it is usually wiser to wait than risk damage from the massive talons of an Eagle in complete possession of a carcass. Eagles working on carcasses are extremely aggressive until they become sated. Thus even though Condors weigh about twice as much as Golden Eagles, they are usually subordinate to the Eagles in feeding.

Introduction to the California Condor

When a carcass is located, condors often do not immediately descend to it. If a coyote (Canis latrans) or golden eagle is feeding on the carcass, they may prevent condors from feeding for some time. On one occasion, I observed nine California condors waiting at a deer carcass for 45 min while an eagle fed.

Supercommunist: Anyone find it kind of weird how some people portay gigantosaurus as a finese predator compared to a tyrannosaurus? Given that tyrannosaurus had the smaller gape and the duller teeth, wouldn't it require more precision? Aug 27, 2024 23:49:00 GMT 5
