It appears that the idea that polar bears will overheat if they run too fast at any distance is true ( Taylor et al., 1985). This study also records a couple instances of adults being killed by other adults.

Reports of polar bears (Ursus maritimus) killing walruses (Odobenus rosmarus) with tools (i.e., stones or pieces of ice) have been verbally communicated to explorers and naturalists by their Inuit guides since the late 1700s. These reports are based on accounts of firsthand observations or on the interpretation of tracks in the snow made by the Inuit hunters who first reported the sightings. We summarize 1) observations made by Inuit hunters to early explorers and naturalists about polar bears using tools, 2) more recent documentation in the literature from Inuit hunters and scientists, and 3) recent observations of a polar bear in a zoo spontaneously using tools in order to assess the possibility that polar bears may occasionally use tools to hunt walruses in the wild.
