2 - About the age of the bears in the sample, the same can be said about the tigers, they used tigers over 3 years old, which are sexually mature but not fully grow, so no fully adult. Still this is what scientists normally do, they put sexually mature animals like "adults" and that is all, there is nothing we can do. Does the 270 kg average for the Bear come from a sample of 'sexually matured' or 'fully grown' animals? If it is the former then these Bears are very large, like Coastal brown bears large. Can you clarify this?

VerdugoCould be wrong but I think he means both sexually and skeletally mature animals were used

My understanding: animals sexually mature are listed as adult. Like seeking the average size of the average ( example ) American man including 11 or 12 year old boys. Problem being, finding the average full-grown bear or tiger is not the objective of the biologist. We have to find charts with ages and sexes listed and do the averaging ourselves.

I imagine, then, that only using skeletally mature animals would get larger results

I imagine, then, that only using skeletally mature animals would get larger results Yes; and I agree that skeletally mature brown bears ( 9+ years old and up ) should be the only bears weighed for finding an average weight for mature brown bears. Also, all weighings should be conducted during the summer months.

Also, all weighings should be conducted during the summer months. I assume this may get masses more comparable to what was thought to be the bear's weight before. But this would in turn bring up the mass of the tigers too; so what GG says is probably still accurate regarding how big they are in relation to the other.

I'm not expert on big cats, but I believe that a tiger reaches his full size potential by perhaps age 5 or 6. A grizzly is fully developed by age 9 but still continues to grow until 15+ years. I'm not talking about merely putting on more fat; which is gained and lost seasonally. I'm talking about bone and muscle. Your big dominant bears are those ranging from 12 to 15 years old or better. Big cat fan-boys ( I'm not talking about enthusiasts ), of which there are a great many knowledgeable posters, are constantly trying to compare their favorite ( lion or tiger ) with a grizzly ( brown bear - Ursus arctos ). I have a huge amount of respect for the big cats; the greatest land-based predators on earth. But there are some areas of reality where they can be beaten. I read the book, "Tigers in the Snow" by Peter Matthiessen. He stated that he never found a tiger ranging above the 500 pound range. In the past, when prey was more plentiful, I can believe 600 pound tigers; 700 pounds I doubt. During those times, the bear would have also been feeding better.

If we go by that, the bear would be a good bit larger. I'd like to hear mountainlord's take on this, when they get back
