As far as I am aware of, no. They lived at about the same time, so it's impossible for one to be the ancestor to the other. They are closely related however. I remember reading that there was at least 5 million years of separation between Giganotosaurus and Argentinosaurus. Mapusaurus was alive during the time that Argentinosaurus was, but not Giganotosaurus...and I do remember reading about Giganotosaurus preying on Andesaurus, so that's where I got to putting my question together. |

5 million years? Interesting, I thought they both lived around ~95 mya?

Anyhow, here's AMNH 5040 by GetAwayTrike, largest specimen of Triceratops with an estimated 275 cm skull (and unlike that UCMP nasal, vertebrae do scale isometrically! So this animal was almost certainly as big as depicted here).  |
