Most of the time they just seem to take some claim out of thin air. 2.5t for Lythronax is quite laughable for example.
In this case, I’d find it particularly strange if they actually made an estimate, because they specifically talk about its size, but only give a figure for its lenght. Had they estimated the weight, why not devote another 3 words to it?
Perhaps they didn’t want to pass judgement on the soft-tissue variables or something?

Either way, it’s wrong to say that Ibrahim et al. estimate this, for all we know they didn’t. Yes, sorry, bad wording on my part. It was indeed one of the authors of the Ibrahim et al. paper, not the paper itself, who provided the estimate to Cau. It is based on the same 3D model that is used in the paper though. By the way, has anyone else tried to flesh out the Ibrahim skeletal? I know it comes with flesh already, but its pretty badly shrink-wrapped in my view. Or more to the point, has anyone tried to flesh out the reared up version that Cau suggests? 3.bp.blogspot.com/-iRwunD5-Gxs/VE94grwASoI/AAAAAAAAGbU/66wbJlRHVcc/s1600/spino%2Bvs%2Bdeino.jpgI gave it a go a while back, and it looked ridiculous. There was so much flesh around the neck area it looked, by eye, to be even more front-heavy than the original version, and that is with me editing it so the long neural spines continued halfway down the tail. Here it is: img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20141108180042/archosauria/images/7/73/Spino_reared_pose_WIP.pngKept the messy modified skeleton there for reference. Only bit that subjectively looks 'right' is the legs, and I had Scott Hartman Torvosaurus as a reference for that.

Sarcosuchus could dive better and has bigger bulk but Spinosaurus seems heavier.

Spino can win this. It just needs to step on it.
