So, does this mean that Champsosaurus actually could bite harder than a gharial?
I've even heard some claiming their bites approached that of broad snouted crocodilians (even Crocodylus).

Not exactly, while the force produced by its jaw muscles were estimated to be greater than in a gharial with equal ODCL, the gharial also beat an American alligator of equal ODCL, so this estimate is not very accurate representation of actual biteforce it seems.
