Information can teach us about an entity and/or influence our opinion about an entity. However, it is important to focus on the reliability factor of the information. Information is obtained from a source. A reliable source is likely to contain well-researched or trustworthy information.
Tips for identifying whether a source is reliable or not:-
Author:
It is important to focus on the author's credentials such as academic background, areas of expertise, scientific contributions of note (publications) and experience.
Respected authors are cited frequently by other scholars in their works. For this reason, always note names that appear in different sources.
Publication date:
If a source is cited in a topic of discussion for supporting arguments, it is important to check if it contains most up-to-date information or not. In the subjects of continuing development and/or advancements, newer findings may override older findings or build on them.
Edition:
Sometimes published sources get revised and updated. These advances are highlighted with editions. Newer editions may contain more up-to-date information. In addition, multiple and/or repeated publications of a work may indicate that it has become a standard source in the area and is reliable.
Publisher:
Peer-reviewed publications are most reliable forms of literature. Reputed scientific journals are the best sources available for finding peer-reviewed publications.
