Earth 7: The story of a polar bear named Lars Maritimus.
In another universe untouched by man, there is a planet similar to earth (named Earth 7) where man does not exist. That planet is full of life even dinosaurs and other extinct animals exist as well and its also third rock from a yellow star just as earth is the third rock from the sun. Some time ago, some brown bears got separated from the rest as continents drifted from each other. They eventually became polar bears to adapt to their new environment. The polar bears are on average 900 pounds for males and 600 pounds for females but exceptionally large males can reach 700 to 800 kgs. Even then they are not the largest as there is one male which is larger than the rest and weighs 2200 pounds. He is the dominant male in his territory. Although normally tolerant towards each other, during mating season, a good many male polar bears fight to death during mating season yet all surviving polar bears get to mate as the young prefer the young and the aggressive old boars are avoided. This story will focus on the 2200 pound male polar bear and his life.
The 2200 pound male polar bear's name is Lars Maritimus. Larger than all his kin put together, he literally dominated every area including food sources like whale carcasses. Spring has just arrived in the north pole and its going to be literally day 24/7. Mating season is also about to begin soon. Despite the fact he was larger than the rest, Lars is still relatively young and just reach the age where he is ready to mate. The mating season was vicious and an old veteran male polar bear at 1760 pounds killed a few rivals (these rivals were naturally large polar bears but they did not have the aggression this veteran male had). Lars decided to give it a go but he was defeated by the veteran although he managed to defeat most of his contenders. Lars ended up mating with an older female polar bear and afters a few days, they parted ways - never meeting again. Lars continued mating with many other females after he killed many male contenders. Lars remembered his defeat by the paws and jaws of the old veteran and vowed to fight better the next time they meet. Moments later Lars met an old bull walrus at a bowhead whale carcase. The polar bear crept up to the walrus and pounced on his back ( hoping to secure two meals) and bit into its neck, the bull walrus struggled but could not shake the attacking bear off. However, with the walrus skin being so thick the polar bear could not find a way to pierce the jagular vain or other vital organs despite having a firm hold on the walrus with his teeth and claws. The walrus knew his only means of escape would be to move towards the water ( the story ends here if the polar bear foolishly held on and got stab to death by the walrus in the sea) and by the time the polar wisely let go and returned to the whale carcase feasting away with his opponent/prey gone temporarily. The walrus escape death but sustain some cuts and bite marks which left him bleeding and angry he had been disturbed by a bear from his meal. The walrus slowly returned to the carcase and seeing the bear at the top most of the whale carcase eating away - oblivious to the surrounding - the walrus climb up the whale carcase with the intention of taking revenge on the bear. The walrus crept up slowly toward the unsuspecting bear and raised its tusk about to stab whe bear - fortunately the bear sensing danger managed to turn around a swipe a paw blow at the walrus head just as the walrus miss his mark and sent his tusk into the whale carcase instead. The polar bear knew that to kill the walrus, he would have to change techniques and gave the approaching angry walrus another blow to the head which this time send the walrus in shock for a while. The polar bear than pushed the walrus off the slippery whale carcass to the other side of the whale carcass( further away from water this time) which resulted with the walrus unfortunately breaking one of his tusk ( well - the polar bear may have already unknowingly hit his tusk while attacking his head) immediately to be pounced on by the polar bear once again. This time instead of just biting the polar bear did use a bit more paw swiping to the head to stun the walrus further. The walrus knowing it was relatively vulnerable headed back to the sea again hoping to escape this time but the polar bear did not let go and every now and then would swipe the walrus on the skull hoping to slow it down and this time bit its head which eventually caused the walrus too finally die near the sea which left the polar bear two meals to feast on ( a walrus and a whale carcass) .
Summer was fading and the cold was returning. Lars was ready to go back to the ice pack: the true realm of the polar bears. When the ice finally returned, Lars headed back to the ice pack and he saw a breathing hole. That hole was way bigger than the regularly ringed seal hole and also larger than that of the bearded seal. What was that creature? Suddenly a huge bull walrus came out, Lars immediately used his huge paws and clobbered the bull walrus in the head. Lars had a good meal that could last him days. Suddenly, a young polar bear which had left his mother a year ago approached Lars begging for some food. Lars initially chased the young bear away but after much persistence from the latter, Lars had compassion on the young bear but only after he had eaten his fill. Other polar bears came along and helped themselves to the walrus carcass. Last in line were skuas, gulls, and an artic fox which had been following Lars closely: keeping a safe distance. In the meantime, the females hibernating had given birth to Lars' cubs. Lars had become a father. Too bad he will not be there for them but become their enemy one day especially during mating season.
Time passed fast, summer approached again and Lars was ready this time. This time Lars would kill the veteran male. Unfortunately Lars lost again the second time but he did kill the veteran male the following year and became the new dominant male polar bear in the artic. However, there was another problem for Lars, there were nanqusaurus in the artic as well and they kill polar bears whenever they can to eliminate competition and they operate in packs. Many polar bear which has left the ice pack became prey for nanqusaurus if they wondered too close to a pack. Lars was attacked by a large female theropod once but he managed to out grapple the female and kill it. This will not be the last fight. Unlike the blue ice bears which kills rogue mammoths, bull woolly rhinos, walruses, bearded seals, sea lions, salmon, musk oxens, and aurochs, Lars can kill a big bull walrus and medium sized whales like belugas at most. Lars, the polar bear is aggressive enough to chase away a mammoth or woolly rhino out of his area and even attack a bowhead whale when hungry but he cannot kill one. The blue ice bear on the other hand can kill a walrus, mammoth, and rhino easily - something out of Lars' league although the polar bear can kill a bull walrus after a hard fight.
Lars Maritimus five years later had his fur looking creamy yellow instead of white not just due to the seal and walrus oil but from sun oxidation. This wasn't just happening to Lars but to many other polar bears especially the more mature ones. Although Lars defeated a big female nanqusaurus, he now knows that there is an enemy out there and the nanqusaurus is the deadliest enemy especially during summer. Many a young polar bear has been killed by a nanqusaurus and even mature males have to be wary but Lars was protected not only because of his size in comparison to the other male polar bears but he was also fortunate the female nanqusaurus happened to wander off from the pack she leads. In the meantime, Lars rules the ice pack with no enemies for now. months later, the ice pack melts again. This time, Lars is more aware of the danger on land. Lars therefore is not in a hurry to get to land but he has to mate to sire the next generation. As Lars reaches land, he saw two males fighting with each other for the right to mate. The loser breaks away but he was killed by a nanqusaurus which took advantage of his injury and tiredness. The smell of blood drew more nanqusaurus in the area and they took advantage of the male polar bears which were fighting as well as the mother with cubs. The mother polar bears faught to their death but it is no use against a pack of nanqusauruses. The fight is on.
Lars Maritimus saw the nanqusaurus killing mother bears and cubs but the focused on the males as they considered the male polar bears as the largest and most powerful competitors in their area. Even though a large male polar bear from 1000 pounds and above makes a formidable opponent, the theropods come in packs and this gives them the advantage over even Lars. Lars wisely avoided the nanqusaurus pack and went after a sick bull walrus which has isolated itself from the rest of the pack. Yet the nanqusaurus packs continued attacking the male polar bears beginning from the exceptionally large ones weighing 800 pounds and below. When it comes to a male of that weight, they would surround the bear and attack it from its flanks while the others distract it. Every year the number of polar bears became fewer not only because the males fight to death during mating season but because of the nanqusaurus packs. Finally, Lars was the last male standing. Lars confronted the nanqusaurus pack which leader he has killed years ago. The pack has found and even bigger female to take their former leader's place. Lars was surrounded and had no way of escape and since he was hungry he decided to die in victory taking the female nanqusaurus with him. Lars brawled with the female nanqusaurus leader and out grappled it but suffered scratches and an open wound. As the polar bear began to feast on the female nanqusaurus, the other theropods pounced on him killing the largest and last male polar bear. Lars died the death of a warrior. The legacy of the polar bears lived on as the females mated with grizzlies and they gave birth to grolar bears.Years later despite the fact the polar bears have become extinct on parrallel earth, the legacy of Lars lived on in the grolar bears.
