The answer with a question inspired me to make this thread. Without further ado, here's why nowadays I'll take pets over dinosaurs 10000000x times over. -You can choose whatever pet you want - in other words your favorite. By contrast you get far less choices with your favorite dinosaurs: you don't get to choose how many of them we find, now well they are described, whether they are downsized or not, etc. -You can enjoy your pets much more than any dinosaur. You can buy or collect them, watch them, feed them, and take care of them - NONE of which can be done with dinosaurs for very obvious reasons. -You can be the president of the fan club for whatever pet you have. By comparison, if you are the president of the fan club for T. rex, Triceratops, whatever dinosaur, you will get nothing but fanboy/girl and bias accusations thrown at you. -Even the most disagreed on pet matters can be solved by, well, seeing how the pets do on said matters (ie: what the appropriate tank size for a certain species of fish is). By contrast you are not going to get far in the dinosaur community with this: constant endless bickering about whether or not X reconstruction that makes Y specimen of T. rex bigger than Z specimen of Giganotosaurus leads to name calling, accusations, bias, arguing, aggression, etc, but you won't get anywhere further without a time machine. Ah, the joys of having your own non-toxic animals.

To put a spin on an old phrase, I think you're comparing one apple vs. every other apple and also the other plants. I hope that doesn't sound harsh.
I don't think any of your points are wrong necessarily. There's lots of toxicity and abuse regarding extant species, regardless of whether they're appropriate to be a pet or not.
(Interesting aside about the size thing: our pet rabbit when we were young got bigger than that breed is apparently supposed to get.)
Yes, people are unlikely to argue about your specific individual pets. (Though a youtuber I've watched got a dog that people complained about...) But I think that people argue plenty about cats and dogs, to be sure, and many have distaste for the rodents.
(On another note, my experience has told me that whoever spawned the idea that fish are a starter pet made a grave mistake. I've not had any of my own, but this subject is another matter, anyway.)
It also seems unfair to compare an individual that you can meet and bond with, to creatures that mostly existed prior to man, but if you find pets and discussions related to them to be more pleasant than those about extinct species, I don't blame you.
