One of my favorite threads on carnivora for everyone can guess what reason, this is where you can discuss your opinion on hybridization of species, husbandry, the vicarious frozen thawed/live feeding debate, the ban of large constrictors, and everything in between.

After hearing a few terrible things about backwater reptiles, i looked over their site and found they've got this shady thing going on The guy who responded to my email was a jackass and i forwarded their details to the proper authority. Had he gone abut it in any professional matter -- and not denying that cane toads and marine toads are the same species(lol) it probably would have gone differently

I think it's a bad idea to feed snakes live prey. Not only is it inhumane to the prey animals, but feeder mice and rats can injure or even kill snakes. I can't comment on mice, but I keep (domesticated) brown rats as pets. While they're usually docile little babies towards humans, they're very strong for their size and voracious eaters with teeth like razors. One of my dominant males was 730 grams, and I have no doubt he could have made a meal out of a corn snake at the very least, if not a small ball python.

It depends on the temperament of the snake, if it is hungry there's no issue if you keep an eye on it. I've fed my ball pythons rats basically for the last year, and never had something happen to my snake.

Admittedly all the horror stories I've read about a rat injuring or eating a snake occurred when the owner wasn't present. I don't think I'll ever get used to the idea of feeding an animal live rats, though. Like dogs and horses, I have a soft spot for them.

When I still had my savannah monitor and my brother had a red tail I used to breed rats for feed and I too never had any issue live feeding with the snake or the savannah monitor when I did give him the odd one but again I always stayed present and made sure not to just leave the rat in there with them. As for the animal cruelty bit I personally see it as enrichment for the herp as well and in some cases you don't have a choice either as I have known some snakes to refuse prekilled.
It's been a few years since I've kept any reptiles and I'm starting to get the itch for it again, I'm really Intrested in the idea try my hand at wislizenii but I may just go with some Crotaphytus as I find them to be an entertaining keep, especially in pairs.
