it can try to use them and possibly suceed , but evidance also suggests that its teeth were fragile so there is a possibilty that it can break off. That is SIDE TO SIDE. Its method involved more up and down than anything else, which its teeth were very resistant to it would only use its teeth to get a throat bite , i doubt he would use it when fighting only when he is ready to get a kill bite in , which is possible but i doubt it i think the more likley outcome is the american lion wins.

Take a look at these As you can see, Smilodon fatalis is considerably more robust, and I think it can even the odds and get that throat stab half the time

Take a look at these As you can see, Smilodon fatalis is considerably more robust, and I think it can even the odds and get that throat stab half the time he can , but i think the more likley outcome is that the lion wins , also that is not such a great size comparrison as the scale of those cats are diffrent in each picture , anyhow also bear in mind the american lion was pretty bulky as well so do not think it would be that easy for smilodon to win.
