Another good view of the tusks One has to wonder, how the heck do those things fit inside the mouth. There is what appears as an interlocking pattern on the tusks but I don't see what could make it.

There are fleshy sockets that are to the outer sides of the upper canines, near the lateral edges of the upper lip. The lower tusks slide inside those when the hippo closes its mouth

^I did see that, but it seems way too small for the tusks to me (the hippo's jaw is too thin for the tusks). Maybe they curve inward when the hippo closes its mouth?

It looks like only about half the length of the lower tusk actually needs to be accommodated in the fleshy sockets. If even that much (this is an extinct species, but conveys my point).

Yeah, makes MUCH more sense. This hippo skull I found seems to confirm it (plus these skulls are a neat addition to the pictoral IMO):
