The Atlantic sailfish (Istiophorus albicans) is a billfish classified in the family Istiophoridae. It is distributed across large swaths of the Caribbean and Atlantic, the exceptions being parts of the extreme north and south. The Atlantic sailfish is closely related to the marlin. It is thought to swim up to 55 kilometers an hour, however recent studies suggest a much lower maximum of 36 km/h. It feeds on small fish and crustaceans.
The Atlantic sailfish is dark metallic blue, with a large dorsal fin that resembles a sail and a spearlike rostrum. It has countershading coloration, with a lighter underbelly, and has horizontal blue bars on the flanks. The front dorsal has small black spots. The maximum published size is 3.15 meters and 58.1 kg, however the average for the species is approximately 22 kg. The bill is used to stun sardines in order to catch and eat them. It is also thought to deter predators and increase hydrodynamic efficiency.
The Atlantic sailfish is a pelagic species, staying close to the surface and rarely venturing below 200 m. It is a migratory species.
