Just some information over the years on the abundance of specific dinosaur taxa/families in the Hell Creek Formation. White et al. (1998) report the following: - Ceratopsidae: 61%
- Hadrosauridae: 23%
- Tyrannosauridae: 4%
- Ornithomimidae: 5%
- "Hypsilophodontidae": 3%
- Dromaeosauridae: 2%
- Pachycephalosauridae: 1%
- Troodontidae: 1%
Horner et al. (2011) report the following as an average for the entire Hell Creek Formation: - Triceratops: 40%
- Tyrannosaurus: 24%
- Edmontosaurus: 20%
- Thescelosaurus: 8%
- Ornithomimus: 5%
- Pachycephalosaurus: 1%
- Ankylosaurus: 1%
This recent analysis ( Stein, 2019) looks at both the Hell Creek and Lance Formations combined, something I previously overlooked (I thought it was just the Hell Creek Formation then), so be forewarned of that. It also reports abundance by associated/articulated remains and isolated remains; take the latter with a grain of salt. Taken as a whole, it would appear that ceratopsids are consistently the most abundant giant dinosaurs in the Hell Creek Formation (+Lance Formation?), unless you look at isolated remains.
