Paleontology, the study of extinct organisms that lived millions of years ago. Cryptozoology, the study of animals whose existence has been suggested, but not proven. Both are interesting topics, and cross paths quite often. A while back, I asked myself this question. Which would win in a battle between an extinct animal and a cryptid. Feel free to make suggestions, I'll list the ideas I've got down below.
Credited to Smedz in another forum. Feel free to make hypothesis and analysis on animal vs cryptics be it one on one or battle royales (e.g. white death cat vs bigfoot etc).

You might want to change the title. It implies there was a discussion about which "discipline" we think is better (as if there was any contest).

Could be either tbh, if you can edit posts.
Cryptozoology is the only real science.
I kid, I kid.

Actually, i did that one. Here you go! Arctodus vs Bigfoot For this showdown, I declare the winner to be Arctodus. I'll explain why. One reason is durability. Bears have proven to be pretty durable over the years, primates on the other hand have soft skin, which doesn't hold up well against sharp objects, and there's no reason a bigfoot would be any different, and the soft skin really isn't going to hold up well against the bone-cracking jaws of the bear. Another reason could be aggression. Bigfoots are normally forest critters from the sounds of it, and has a different lifestlye than Arctodus had, which was taking kills from other carnivores, which would have required some aggression, the lifestyle of bigfoot does not sound to require as much aggression.

You did that one? Wow, what a coincidence.
Pretty good and thorough analogy. I agree the short faced bear would win more often than not.

Well done smedz. Here is my story: In the deep forest, the biggest of the bigfoots lived. One day one of the bigfoots (a young but full grown specimen) wandered too close to the plains. There he saw an Arctodus simus chasing away a few smilodon populators from their hard earn meal. Usually a bigfoot will stay clear of any large bear, white death cat, and smilodon populator. However, this youngster was inexperience and hyper aggressive. His extremely adventerous nature probably led him wandering all the way from the forest of Alaska to the border of the forest where the plains are. The bigfoot tried to get a piece of the bison carcase but was attacked and mauled by the larger and more powerful Arctodus. The bigfoot ran back into the forest where it was killed by a white death cat. Later on a grizzly bear drove off the white death cat and took sole possession of the carcass.

4400 pound bear beast vs Thirty 500 pound male lions. Bear beast vs 30 male lions. A1 1 and AI 2 were both reading a book called 'Tower of London' where are large brown bear was pitted against several lions which failed to engage the bear even though they were capable of killing it as a team and dogs had to be used to destroy the bear. Although the male lion is the boldest and most aggressive of the big cats, it does not have the mentality of gladiator dogs. This have been proven in the battle royales where male Kodiak bears, exceptionally large grizzly bears, and male polar bears have been displacing African lion prides, Barbary lions pride, smilodon prides, cave lion prides, and American lion prides. The AIs also discovered that both the African and Barbary lions are the best at coorporating in groups. A red eyed bear beast at 4400 pounds was pitted against a pride of 30 male African lions. The fight is on, the lions were hesitant to engage the bear beast which was about the same size as a black rhino. The bear beast saw its chamce to exert dominance charged at the lions which avoided it. The bear beast chased the lions around and managed to eventually catch one of them and maul it to death. This angered the rest of the lions and they leapt at the bear beast. The bear beast use its flexible forearms and managed to kill a few lions but eventually seccumbed due to lost of blood and exhaustion. It seems the lions were provoked too far.

Deinosuchus vs Bear Lake Monster A deinonychus and a Bear Lake monster were pitted in the same river where they are bound to cross paths eventually. The AIs decides to give it a try by throwing a huge Cape buffalo carcass on the river bank. A few hours later the bear lake monster arrived a began feeding on the buffalo carcass. Several hours later, a deinonychus arrived and fed on the same carcass after a tussle which ended up in a draw.
