There are more bison than the mastodon can handle, with better horns, the bison win this battle.

I also favor the 5 bisons. They do outnumber and outweigh the mastodon, in addition to much bigger horns better for goring.

African elephants have walked through a river with angry hippo and come out unscathed.

Now a mastodon is way more powerful than an African bush elephant and these long horned bisons are weaker than a hippopotamus.

Why are the bisons way weaker than a hippo? They're a full third heavier and more agile

A hippo can weigh up to three tonnes. A hippo not only has thick hide but blubber to protect its vital organs. The giant bisons can run faster on land but they weigh 2 tonnes at max.

That leaves another question: how fast do you think the mastodon can kill each bison before succumbing? Those horns are no joke

While I agree that these horns are no joke, white rhinos have gored weaker animals (which took a while to die), therefore, I think the mastodon would crush them before hand. A triceratops would do even better given its added protection.

I read the op carefully. It seems that mastodon is pound to pound stronger than both an elephant and mammoth pound to pound.

While I agree that these horns are no joke, white rhinos have gored weaker animals (which took a while to die), therefore, I think the mastodon would crush them before hand. A triceratops would do even better given its added protection. This is in non-lethal confrontations; all the rhinos want to do is INTIMIDATE, not kill. This is to the death, so I do believe the bisons will cause more damage than that
