I assume the dire wolf is stronger and fiercer than the modern wolf, I dont know maybe the dire wolf pack takes this

I suppose I'd favor the bear here - though it is close. It's able to dispatch of wolves very quickly and should be durable enough to take a lot of damage, though the wolves do stand a decent chance.

The combined weight of the wolf pack does surpass the bear, but the bear is a much bigger animal still, and its claws and strength can allow it to dominate each wolf.

^ I agree. 4 seems too few, although grizzly size varies widely. A big male bear should take this, but it won't be easy.

If the wolves get over their fear of a discound short-faced bear standing up and roaring at them, they could win this. As it stands, this ends up being a new Red Wedding.

As far as Grizzly bear yes it is a very powerful animal. However 4 modern wolves although will not defeat grizzly bear they are strong enough to challenge it. If it is a larger species of the wolves. Pack of Mackenzie river wolves can bring down a wood bison no easy feat although there is probably more than four of them in this case. Dire wolves have about double bite force than modern wolves. They are more strongly build and as it was said more durable. Lot would depend on which grizzly bear and which dire wolves it would be for both of them vary greatly in size and weight. Modern wolves have bite force of about 400 psi although it is quite possible that they can deliver more if fighting for their lives. Dire wolf has bite force about 900 psi that is quite a bit more. Grizzly bear has bite force of 1200 psi yes that is still more than dire wolf but not by that much. Grizzly bear has size and strength plus it has claws something that wolves don't have. However remember that there is 4 wolves. Over all I would say that its 50/50 it lot depends on what the wolves would be willing to risk.
