Infinity Blade: Yes you can make a thread on mesonychids Sept 18, 2023 18:59:52 GMT 5
Exalt: Almost everything I can find is on either Andrewsarchus or whale evolution, both of which they are considered to have lost to the ungulates now Sept 18, 2023 7:22:58 GMT 5
Exalt: Trying to do research on them is not fun Sept 18, 2023 7:22:30 GMT 5
Exalt: Could I make a thread about mesonychids? Sept 18, 2023 7:22:16 GMT 5
Exalt: One more thing Sept 18, 2023 7:22:04 GMT 5
tyrannasorus: How well does the amount of stress the mandible can withstand translate to how high the animals bite force is? Sept 17, 2023 21:14:29 GMT 5
tyrannasorus: Google gives a range of 0.5-1 inches of thickness depending on species, with their belly’s being considerably thinner Sept 17, 2023 11:20:08 GMT 5
Supercommunist: Any idea how thick crocodilian skin is on average? According to some iffy sources the belly skin is often 1mm thick but I think they have thinner skin on their belies. Sept 17, 2023 10:37:01 GMT 5
Exalt: -Possibly do a thread for SANU's if there isn't already an appropriate spot to discuss them. Sept 17, 2023 8:10:44 GMT 5
Exalt: -ask why non-platypus mammals do not use poison or venom, particularly given that the Synapsid lineage has employed it Sept 17, 2023 8:10:23 GMT 5
Exalt: Reminders to self for when I have more time/energy: Sept 17, 2023 8:09:50 GMT 5
tyrannasorus: I see, will look more into lizard bites then, maybe it’s because of longer teeth of some theropods that I thought lips would obstruct it, thanks anyway Sept 17, 2023 7:44:19 GMT 5
Infinity Blade: Apart from that, there were mosasaurs that were specialized durophages, like Globidens. I don't know anyone who doubts it had lips, and as a literal lizard itself, there's no reason to think it didn't have them despite that powerful bite. Sept 17, 2023 6:32:35 GMT 5
Infinity Blade: They have blunt crushing teeth and mandibles nearly or completely round in cross section, clearly adaptations to withstand powerful biting when processing hard objects. Sept 17, 2023 6:30:55 GMT 5
Infinity Blade: Adult Nile monitors crush snails, mussels, and crabs and their jaw biomechanics can actually be compared to tyrannosaurids. Sept 17, 2023 6:30:42 GMT 5
tyrannasorus: Infinity Blade: yes but most prey on small prey items like insects which don’t require that hard a bite to crack open. Apart from crocodyllians, I don’t know of other reptiles that have a crushing bite. The lips would take a lot of stress while biting Sept 17, 2023 5:53:31 GMT 5
tyrannasorus: Supercommunist, both can curl their lips back, which is a unique feature to only mammals(muscular and mobile lips) which is different from the immobile lips on lizards so I don’t know if you can use them as a comparison Sept 17, 2023 5:44:30 GMT 5
Infinity Blade: I understand, no problem. Anyway, the lips aren't withstanding the stress of the bite. There are durophagous lizards today with presumably powerful bites for their size but still have lips. Sept 17, 2023 4:17:38 GMT 5
Supercommunist: I don't think there would be any issue at all. Tasmanian devils and bush dogs have very high bite forces for their size but they aren't known to damage their own lips. Sept 17, 2023 4:05:21 GMT 5
tyrannasorus: Genuine question here, I don’t really want to debate lips Sept 16, 2023 17:34:43 GMT 5
