I'm assuming that jags aren't the most powerful chompers of all felines in absolute terms...in which that title i believe belongs to either the tiger or the lion, because of their skulls being much larger and heavier. there's a video measuring the bites of various dog breeds finding a direct correlation between in the size of the head and how hard they can bite down....in another video the rottweiler and the german shepherd scored higher than the apbt tested.
or could there be other factors and the jaguar really does have the strongest bite in absolute terms as well?

Who has even assumed that it has the strongest bite force in absolute terms?

That's a claim you encounter frequently on the web, and I think I also heard it in documentaries before. I wouldn't give much weight to it. Certainly, relative to their size jaguars are very strong biters, but a tiger that's two times heavier will also have a considerably stronger bite in absolute terms.

On the net one can find many info sites that claim that jaguars having the strongest bites of all felines, but i now suspect that this is about as nonsense as saying a leopard can haul 3X its own weight into a tree. someone have a copy of the biteforce chart of various carnivoran species? = Vodmeister or maybe 221extra ?

LeopJagFrom “Bite Club: comparative bite force in big biting mammals and the predatory behavior in fossil taxa”, by Stephen Wroe, Colin McHenry, and Jeffrey Thomason (from 2005): The above is bite force at the canines. Now if you adjust those values so they can be compared directly to the Jaguar; At weight parity: 1. Jaguars bite 76% harder than Brown Bears. 2. Jaguars bite 8% harder than Tigers 3. And they bite 22% harder than Lions

Vodmeister, why are you posting the 1st study? It's way more flawed then the 2nd,the most glaring flaw being; a Cheetah (in this case a smaller specimen!) having a more powerful bite force then a Leopard.

Kinda reminds me of the study I posted in the Animal bite force thread (it claimed a cheetah to have a stronger bite force than a cougar or a jaguar: animalcreativity.webs.com/Bite%20forces,%20canine%20strength%20and%20skull%20allometry%20in%20carnivores.pdf ).
