Check out this very interesting new documentary on what possibly killed a 3 meter great white off the coast of Australia. Goes into a lot of predatory behavior of great whites, orcas, sperm whales, colossal squid and more. The videos excerpts are amazing, including for the perhaps the first time ever, a FACE TO FACE INTERACTION between an adult great white shark and an adult orca. It starts on 1:26 of the first video and although it's brief, the animals appear to respect but not fear each other. They are of fairly comparable size. I'm not sure if they answer definitively what killed the 3 meter shark, the possibilities are an orca, a larger great white, or a colossal squid. I think it may also hint that perhaps there's something else unknown which may have been the culprit. The attack took place on a tagged great white, which was apparently chased down and devoured at around 500 meters in depth. Several months later the tag was recovered with recorded data. The documentary also examines orca pods attacks on sperm whales (and possibly on colossal squid) and great white predation on other sharks. Here's the videos and articles. The first video is the longest and contains the orca/great white interaction. The documentary just aired in Australia on Nov. 3, so we only have these brief excerpts. au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/regional/great-southern/a/-/news/19623905/what-killed-a-3m-great-white/australiandocs.com/Popup_SearchForOceansSuperPredator.htmwww.watoday.com.au/environment/western-australia-shark-mystery-sparks-bigger-questions-over-ocean-predators-20131029-2wdo8.html

Let us know where you found the full documentary and give us the recap of the show after you've seen it. Thanks. It´s on movie2k(where else? ) A short recap: There´s a very special event, attracting huge amounts of marine life, due to hydrocarbons leaking from the sea floor. There seem to be even Antarctic Orcas (no idea which morphotype). It also attracts Giant Squid(really giant as shown by some grainy pictures). The Orcas hunt those squid. There is also a huge amount of GWS. The 3 meter GWS was most likely eaten by another, larger GWS. I do not want to spoil to much, but the behaviour of certain animals towards each other is really interesting. All in all, it was a very good show, but sometimes overdramatized.

Thanks Stomatopod. Does it also show sperm whale and orca interactions? Can you comment briefly on that clip where the great white and orca are swimming together? I will have to watch it for myself when I have the time.

I have watched this documentary on movie2k and just wanted to say that it was quite informative. I have to retract my statement above however, that it showed great whites and orcas interacting/swimming together. It looked like a great white in the video preview, but upon watching the full video, I am certain that the shark interacting with the orca was a grey reef shark, albeit a large one. Again, there was no predatory or aggressive intent from either animal, probably due to the fact of the abundance of prey for each of them.
