I've heard the claim quite a number of times that ostriches are capable of killing lions (I've often heard they do it via kick to the face). Even National Geographic claims this animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/birds/ostrich.htmlBut can they actually do it? Are there instances of them doing so?

I was wondering about that too. It wouldn’t surprise me if that were true, but it can hardly be a common ocurrence. Still, there seems to be a lack of actual verified accounts.

NO.
There are several videos of drunk idiots teasing aggressive ostriches with little to no harm done to them afterwords. Even cassowaries armed with their giant claws, sometimes fall prey to domesticated dogs. The only big cat an ostrich or any living ratite has a chance of killing would be a cheetah.

I've always had serious doubt on the idea. And lions are bigger than ostriches!

I've always doubted it myself. It probably isn't very fun for the lion, but not life threatening either.

There's a documentary about releasing tigers into the wilds of Africa. The two man raised "tame" tigers, chase down and singlehandedly kill ostriches with ease.

WTF Runic how dare you forget Ostriches! They are AMAZING! Anyways, back on topic, the kick of an ostrich is blown heavily out of proportion.

Lol, the puncturing ability of casswary kicks is a very serious matter. Given that ostriches use their feet in the same matter it is absolutely possible they could kill lions on rare occasions, just like Cassowaries kill dogs and humans and warthogs can puncture lion hearts with their tusks. That doesn’t mean a lion or tiger chasing them could not kill them easily.

On a serious note, I don't blame you at all. I am sure something like that happens to many people, but they don't want to make themselves look stupid.

An ostrich kick probably could kill a lion, but it'd have to be very lucky to do so. I would imagine they would absolutely kill AWD's if they managed to kick them though, like the cassowary does with dogs in AUS
