In September 2012, I have opened a thread on carnivora to introduce a certain book. As it's about animals, I thought this zone is appropriate for it, even though it may belong in the general zone, but I think it's OK. Also, I guess anyone here cares for the mass extinction at the moment. Here is the OP of that thread:I got inspired from an Alltime10s video to share the book here as well: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrokfZ6mD5AI have to say, this video was a serious shock. The amur leopard population is so low that they are forced to inbreeding. Therefore, their fertility rate is 1 (from formerly 1.9, which is maybe OK for a country, but not for wild animals)! Even if the human is not going to harass it any further, it has good chances to go extinct. Not to mention the tortoise where only one confirmed pair exist. A species can't be much closer to extinction, can't it? You can write how much you liked the book and if the video was surprising even to you. You can also write if you personally have any hope in the mass extinction being halted in the near future.

Every such project has the potential of making a few more people aware, and a few more people are already something. There simply have th be enough such initiatives in order to save these animals.
Time is a crucial factor at this point. I think humans can start protecting the environment with what they do, the tools are there, but they need to be developed.

I believe this is the best thread to post this. Here a very study on the mass extinction that I know from a recent video: www.sciencemag.org/content/344/6187/1246752.abstractThe reason why this study got attention is the statement of biodiversity loss occurring at a 1000 times higher rate than it should be. Thanks to theropod for replying in this thread BTW!
