The spotted hyena have been known to gather in large groups, but they do not normally hunt in such large groups. A clan of hyenas is normally pretty much the same as a pack of wolves. Hyenas appear to be quite cowardly. A pack of wolves is well organized and hunt using strategy. The hyena is better at making use of a carcass; eating just about everything. A clan of hyenas could feast on the wolf pack's leftovers. If a clan of hyenas and a pack of wolves in equal numbers had a dispute over a carcass, I believe the wolves would take it; but I'm not sure enough to bet on it. Hyenas are tough hard-to-kill predators.

Actually hyenas aren't as cowardly as people make them out to be. Hyenas are honestly one of the most underrated creatures in the animal kingdom. There needs to be a hyena appreciation thread.

Well, BlackIce posted that the wolf has an a bit weaker bite force, but an overall more useful feeding apparatus for grappling, so I doubt that. I tell ya, blackice doesn't mess around when it comes to debating about wolves. But some of his posts made me look at the wolf differently. I actually thought that a 100 lb cougar could kill a wolf 50 lbs heavier than it! I severely overestimated cats simply because of its forearms and claws. Now I see wolves much stronger than originally. Glad I could help lol.

I believe spotted hyenas can be highly strategic in cooperation when bringing down big prey, no? they are one of the most intelligent carnivorans from what i understand..

You have to remember, this thread is clan vs pack rather than one on one.

If a pack of wolves are on a carcass, could ( or would ) a clan of hyenas of equal numbers muscle in and take over the kill?

You have to remember, this thread is clan vs pack rather than one on one. I believe the OP should get changed (I let 0ldgrizz do so, so that he can decide pack/clan size and such). It should be clear that this is a group fight.

Hmm, the OP mentions that wolves and hyenas coexisted at one point in Europe (namely during the last glacial maximum). I suppose this fight would then be a pack of C. l. spelaeus ("cave wolf" apparently) vs. a pack of C. c. spelaea (cave hyena).

Right.
I guess I'm not completely sure who wins.

I know about this, I just wanted that the pack information is included in the OP in case this thread gets very long and new participants want to know what it is about without searching for extra info in the replies.
