There's seemingly not much in it in size, or do I believe in any significant physical strength difference. The dire wolf likely has the edge in stamina and bite force; while agility, retractile claws, and grappling ability goes to the leopard.
This one is very close to a 50/50 match, IMO.

If Vodmeister believes this is a stalemate, the dire wolf must win. Joke aside, I believe the comment above me sums it up well.

if I remember correctly, the only teeth felids use as weapons in combat are their four canines (their carnassials are supposedly only for feeding). I'm still quite foggy as to whether canids use their carnassials in predation/combat, maybe someone can clear that up for me. And if they can, the wolf would certainly be biting harder there than the cat would be at its canines. Should that not be: "at its carnassials"?

I meant that the canid's carnassial bite force would be higher than the felid's canine bite force.

Leopard wins, as long as the dire wolf isn't significantly larger. There are animals whose primary, if not sole, weapon is their mouth that I'd favor over grappling predators even at parity. But those particular examples have really big heads, and more importantly mouths, for their size (we're talking things like hyaenodontids, entelodonts, some theropods, etc.). Those mouths are big enough to make grappling head-on very dangerous (in that one arm is very liable to being bitten and disabled), even to an animal just as large as itself.
Getting bitten by a dire wolf would obviously suck, but I don't think it has the tools to win at similar weights.

This fight is close. But for me, the deciding factor of the fight was that leopards have much better grappling ability which allows it to more easily control the wolf, but the wolf would still have a decent chace due to it’s powerful bite force. IMO it would be 6/10 times win for the leopard.

I favor the dire wolf, it's more robust, durable, larger, and has a very deadly bite. Plus it has superior stamina

I'm gonna go with the leopard on this one. A dire wolf probably wouldn't have been much different than a regular modern day wolf. Just more robust, a little heavier and with a stronger bite.

It is significantly more robust than a grey wolf; same dimensions but 18 kg bigger Moreover, it has a 13 kg weight advantage and a proportionately larger head. Both sides have a good chance, but IMO the wolf wins this 6/10 for those reasons

Hi guys!
I joined this forum yesterday and this is my first post!
I think this fight would be 50-50 with a slight edge to the leopard.
Both animals have their advantages - the wolf is equal in size, extremely durable, has powerful jaws, and amazing stamina.
The leopard is quicker, more agile, has canine teeth better designed to kill, larger limbs, and superior grappling and striking ability.
The reason why I gave the leopard a slight edge is because I think the leopard has the more important advantages.
IMO, grappling/striking ability > stamina
Nevertheless, it is a very close fight.

Hi animallover! Great to see another friendly face! Just would like to give some of my supporting reasons for the wolf here: 1: The dire wolf has a 13 kg size advantage actually - leopards average 55 kg, dire wolves 68 kg 2 and 3: That depends. How well can the leopard USE its advantages? 4: Agreed, very, very, very close match

Hi dinosauria101! Thanks for letting me join this forum!
1. I did some research - and yes, the wolf is indeed larger. But, actually, African leopards average ~60 kg, not 55 kg.
2 and 3. I know that the wolf is bigger and stronger - but I don't think it is by a margin that would overwhelm the leopard. The reason why I think the leopard will be able to use it's advantages well is because the wolf lacks the agility to overwhelm the leopard with it's greater size, strength, and stamina. Not to mention that while the wolf is stronger overall, the leopard seems to be slightly stronger towards the front end (chest and forelimbs). This would increase the power of the leopard's strikes and it's grip while grappling.
4. Yep. But, do correct me if I got something wrong. And if you happen to find something else in favor of the wolf, please let me know!

If so, private message me. I'll fill you in over PM 1: That's actually a rather common misconception; 55 kg is a better mean for many African leopards. www.vetdentsa.co.za/PDFs/2004-africat-vol12-annual%20exam%20page%205%20and%208.pdf2 and 3: There is another advantage I know of - robustness. The dimensions are approximately the same, yet the wolf is 13 kg heavier. That advantage in robusticity may help it both break out of the grappling and overpower its foe
