Tigers always - repeat, ALWAYS - choose a bear smaller than himself to ambush as prey. Thus never a full-grown male Usurri brown bear. Nevertheless, if this extremely unlikely event were to take place, and a big prime male tiger were to execute a perfect ambush upon a full-grown male brown bear, I would still wager my bank account on the bear.

Don't know if this has been posted before, but 4 yrs ago, Batalov seems to be recounting below some interactions of the male tiger Ochkarik and the big male bear, Chlamid before the fatal conflict, in which he seems to indicate the bear would attempt to avoid the male tiger. steemit.com/photography/@fareast-history/the-tigress-rachelle-and-the-bear-chlamidaThe Tigress Rachelle and The Bear Chlamida fareast-history (49)in #photography • 4 years ago A small intriguing story from the forests near the city of Khabarovsk. A bear, who regularly took prey from a tigress in the Lazo region of the Khabarovsk Territory, lagged behind it for reasons that were not quite clear. A huge brown bear with maniacal perseverance selected the prey from a tigress named Rachelle with two cubs that live in the territory of a forestry hunting farm, Lazo. The fact of persecution is confirmed by the footage of the photo-trap set by the hunting biologist, the director of the Durminskoye forestry enterprise, Alexander Batalov, on a tiger trail near the base. Typically, situations where the tiger and the bear are at loggerheads are due to a shortage of fodder resources. However, in this season, fodder in the forest is enough for all animals. This can be seen in the bear, which ate to incredible proportions. It seems that he was just used to an easy life "on the shoulders" of a tigress. "Some time ago, she growled in a special way in the taiga, as far as we understand, she complained about the bear to the tiger Ochkarik who walks nearby. He is the father of Rachelle's children, we recorded several times that they meet regularly. And at the moment the bear (we gave him the nickname of Chlamid, because he is incredibly huge) moved away from her and does not pursue him, "said Alexander Batalov, the director of the Durminskoye forestry enterprise. Although in the area Lazo has a lot of snow, neither the white-breasted bears, nor the brown ones are still in hibernation. According to the hunter, they can stay awake for long if there is enough food in the forest. Employees are watching the further development of the situation. Tigress Rachelle

This was his answer: Здравствуйте, Пабло. Я не знаю этой истории. Это не научная статья и ссылаться на это я бы не стал. Всего хорошего, Иван Translation: Hello Pablo. I don't know this story. This is not a scientific article and I would not refer to it became. Good luck, Ivan My comment: This is what Pablo obtain from Ivan S, the founder of Siberian Tiger Project (STP). Once upon a time a tiger named Dale was rumoured to take Ussuri brown bears ‘twice his weight’ but it has been refuted by STP. Instead the largest brown bear he killed was a female almost his own weight. I hope it is alright to post more emails later on. A poster named ‘Shadow’ from Wildfact actually contacted Alexander B and he said it is unconfirmed. Male brown bears are not territorial like big cats and they prefer to be in an area where females are abundant to spread their genes.Open to discussion here. Here is Ivan S email: russia.wcs.org/en-us/about-us/staff/projectid/407.aspxHere are partial emails from Shadow to Alexander B:

The Amur tiger is the only tiger species who routinely hunts bears. Bear remains are extremely rarely found in tiger scat in any other subspecies of tiger. In the R.F.E., tigers generally stalk and kill juvenile brown bears from ages 3 to 5 years old or ( less often ) adult she-bears. The oldest male brown bear confirmed killed by a tiger was 5 years old. There are no confirmed accounts of a tiger ever killing a bear bigger than himself.

What about the account I posted regarding Batalov? I don't know if it's confirmed, but it certainly is strongly suggestive, that this particular tiger killed a brown bear of considerable size and larger than the tiger. Here's the thing. Nobody could take one incident of any particular contest and extrapolate a general conclusion from it. Do I think it's possible that tigers have at some point in time killed brown bears larger than or at least comparable to themselves? Yes definitely possible, and even probable. Is it the case that brown bears have also killed adult tigers, perhaps even tigers that are at times are bigger than themselves, or at least full-grown male tigers? Yes, definitely possible and even probable. I'm just not sure why so many posters are so dogmatic about this, similar to lion versus tiger. This is not a clear-cut victory for either animal. Now, if you get into the gigantic Kodiak brown brown bears of North America or polar bears, the contest becomes even more skewed in favor of the bear. At some point, overwhelming size advantage kicks in, just as it does every other animal conflict.

Scientific data and studies proving that bears are a very important food source for tigers, especially in the summer months. Here's a scientific study reported by leading Amur tiger biologists, Dale Miquelle, Linda Kerley etc... showing that tigers consumed more bears than wild boars during the snow-free period:Across all sites, tiger diet varied seasonally, with tigers consuming more bear, and less wild boar biomass during the snow-free months:
In addition, bears constituted a significantly higher proportion of tiger diet in the summer, and while not significant, badgers increased in the diet of tigers during the snow-free period as well... The increased predation on bears and badgers is likely due to their increased availability following emergence from hibernation and the increased vulnerability of their young, although tigers do prey on adult bears. Amur tiger predation on bear is not a new phenomenon, but our results, in addition to identifying seasonality in tiger predation of bears, also suggests that bears constitute a relatively large portion of tiger diet, particularly during the snow-free period... www.researchgate.net/profile/Dale_Miquelle/publication/275837048_A_comparison_of_food_habits_and_prey_preference_of_Amur_tiger_Panthera_tigris_altaica_Timmink_1984_at_three_sites_in_the_Russian_Far_East/links/56635fe908ae418a786bb13d.pdf Here's a scientific study showing that tigers killed adult brown bears OUTSIDE their dens, and not during hibernation:Although tigers prey on adult Brown bears, we did not detect predation by tigers on denned brown bears. Brown bear selection of den site and den type may reduce risk of predation by tigers because tigers infrequently used such high elevations (J. Goodrich, Wildlife Conservation Society, unpublished data) and brown bears could likely defend the narrow tunnel at the entrance of an excavated den..
A radio-collared adult male tiger killed and ate a radio-collared adult male Asiatic black bear: www.researchgate.net/publication/242275352_Denning_ecology_of_brown_bears_and_Asiatic_black_bears_in_the_Russian_Far_East More data showing that bears comprise a large significant portion of the tigers diet. Claws of ADULT BEARS were found repeatedly in the excreta of tigers:
The suggestion that tigers attack bears only when there is an insufficient amount of its usual food, is not quite correct. Since attacks take place also at their high numbers.
From one of the leading Amur tiger biologists - Linda Kerley
Her email regarding tiger predation on bears: (The quality of her email is poor)
I have been studying tiger food habits for the past 14 years and have found several bears killed and eaten by tigers. Some tigers specialize in eating bears and they will kill both Asiatic black bears and LARGER Brown bears. We radio-collared one male tiger who ate bears all summer and lost weight in the winter presumably because he couldn't find his favourite food. Recently, people have been killing bears because of an increased demand for bear feet and gall bladders, and I worry that this will effect tigers as well because bears are an important food source for tigers in summer.
I've seen tigers prey on all shapes and sized of black bears and up to the LARGEST and HEALTHIEST female brown bears.

In addition, bears con- 39 stituted a significantly higher proportion of tiger diet in 40 the summer, and while not significant, badgers increased 41 in the diet of tigers during the snow-free period as well. 42 The increased predation on bears and badgers is likely 43 due to their increased availability following emergence 44 from hibernation and the increased vulnerability of their 45 young, although tigers do prey on adult bears and there 46 is evidence that tigers will prey on bear while they are 47 denning as well (Seryodkin et al. 2003). Amur tiger pre- 48 dation of bears is not a new phenomenon (Miquelle et 49 al. 1999, 2005; Seryodkin et al. 2003), but our results, pseudoreplicates, and may impair our ability to un- 30 50 in addition to identifying seasonality in tiger predation 51 this study the inclusion of pseudoreplicates changed the 50 51 360 of bears, also suggests that bears constitute a relatively 18 large portion of tiger diet, particularly during the snow- 19 free period. This runs counter to previous assertions that 20 the risk of injury was too high for tigers to regularly 21 predate bears (Miquelle et al. 2010). While bear may remain a relatively minor component of tiger diet relative 23 to ungulates on an annual basis, our study suggests they 24 constitute a seasonally important prey item for tigers.

Tigers prey on young sub-adults and females, they avoid the formidable large males. They ambush bears.
Bears are an important part of the tigers’ diet, representing 2.2% of all kills found. Bear remains were found in 8.4% of examined tiger scat.
“When we determine the share of the Himalayan bear in the diet of tiger in two ways there was a *significant* difference (Fig. 19.1) This share turned out to be *7.4 times higher* when a *excremental* than when analyzing victims.”
*Young bears* frequently become the prey of tiger (Khramstov, 1993).
“Among the brown bears we found killed by tigers, there were only females and a bear cub, there were *no adult males*
According to tiger diet analyses, +brown bears can account for up to 5% of a tigers' diet*, although Asiatic black bears are more commonly consumed (Tkachenko 2012). ... ..
A bear is also capable of being the first to attack the tiger and pursue it to get prey *(Sysoev, 1960, 1966; Kostoglod, 1981)* Over the territory of Khabarovsk krai and Primorye, *remains of tigers killed and eaten by brown bears were repeatedly found* (Sysoev, 1960, 1966; Rakov, 1965, 1970; Gorokhov, 1973; Kostoglod, 1977, 1981).
Most of the brown bears killed by tigers are young animals, or females, and are generally killed by male tigers (Seryodkin et al. 2018).
The brown bear is capable of not only showing resistance to the tiger that attacked it, but also of emerging victorious out of the fight.
Brown bears are also taken, though tigers will usually avoid the formidable large males, they prey on cubs, and occasionally adults (females).
lt male (the tiger acted in the role of scavenger), one male at the age of 3–4 years (killed by a tiger), six adult females (five of them were prey of tigers), and one bear cub of indefinite sex in the sec- ond year of life (killed by a tiger). Of the eight Asiatic black bears that were all prey of tigers, two were adult males, one was an adult female, and five animals were of indeterminate sex (two young and three adults). There were no adult males.

scientist and expert - Bart Schleyer
"Some older tigers would also stalk and kill brown bears, which were easier to catch than elk. Following tigers with radio locators, Bart could read these stories in the snow. The tigers usually just walked the bears down from behind. The big cats had killer instincts and usually about a hundred pound weight advantage on the bears. They would go straight for the neck and sever the spine at the base of the skull.
Tiger jumps on a bear from above, holds its chin by one front paw, and its neck by another paw, simultaneously biting through its cervical vertebrates… (Baikov, cited after: Ognev, 1935). Yudin (pers. comm.) also confirm the fact that tiger kill prey by cutting its neck.
From renowned biologist Baikov, 30 years of experience in the field studying tigers
“A rather big tiger would defeat a bear of almost the same weight. For this purpose, the predator tracks down the bear and makes an ambush, ordinarily on a rock or in wind-fallen trees, taking the side against the wind. Carelessly a bear slowly goes by an ambush, suspecting nothing, and the tiger rushes out on it from above, its one paw claws under the bear's chin, the other paw at the throat, and the tiger bites through the neck vertebrae. “
“Tigers prefer to conceal themselves in their environment and use the wind direction to its benefit before making a kill. Their stripes camouflage well in the bush, tall grass, and bamboo thickets letting them move in closer to their prey. They stalk them and slowly reach a striking distance – freezing completely, before sprinting for the final step. That’s why they are called ambush hunters.”
