I would like to suggest a karma system, where users can give other users points for especially informative or well written post- This wuld inspire users to post more often and to improve the quality of their posts at the same time. I think proboards has an implemented feature for this kind of thing.

^I agree, that would be a good idea. another thing: I have been wondering about the use of our profile section and this was my conclusion: As we are not carnivora ( ) I assume the purpose is to create the most reliable and comprehensive possible collection of verifyable biological data. It would be good to somehow publish them in a different medium (I'm thinking of a website where all the profiles are copied to in a reviewed version), because hardly anyone will search for information in a discussion board due to the reputation of being unreliable. Most people unfortunately cannot assess the credential of information when they see it and in fact it might really be difficult to create neatly arranged, uniform and professional looking profiles in the context of a forum. What do you think? I'm not sure whether we can conduct it with realistic amount of work, but I think if we can it would be beneficial.

Sorry, I must have expressed it a bit too chaotically.
What I mean is a kind of website were we could display our profiles.
I tought most people wouldn't use a forum as a reference and it is hard to keep all the stuff collected in the profiles clear.

Here is more or less the first draft of the animal forum reciprocity strategy:
If members are in favor please tell me soon so that this can be the first forum to adopt this strategy.
Hey, I am writing this since I have noticed that several animal forums have a policy of not making advertisement to other forums. I think on the whole this behavior is stifling the whole community since it makes the forums insular and not interconnected. On the other hand any individual forum owner has a reason not to allow this, since it may direct the little viewers he has away from the board, while he would profit from the views that other naive forums that link to them. How could we circumvent this apparent dilemma? I propose adopting the following strategy:
Allow advertisement to all forums where exactly the same strategy is in place, but do not allow advertisement to forums that do not allow advertisement or forums that allow advertisement to forums that do not allow advertisement or forums that allow advertisement to forums that do allow etc..
This leads to the situation that all forums adopting this strategy gain viewers from the other forums making the pool of forums more attractive because of faster interconnection and quicker access to interesting content, which would increase viewer count in total. On the other hand forums who do not adopt the strategy can not profit from you because you dont link to them, and you have the advantage that you offer more content in practice since people can access a lot of interesting forums through you.
If at least one forum adopts this strategy I will maintain a list of the forums adopting this strategy, so as to give everybody oversight.
Hope this gets responded to soon.

While I think it is a great strategy, I'm not sure whether it is possible to implement it. There'd have to be enough other forums using it, and were are we supposed to find them?

While I think it is a great strategy, I'm not sure whether it is possible to implement it. There'd have to be enough other forums using it, and were are we supposed to find them? First implementing does not cost us anything, we can only gain, so we should adopt even if the expected win is small. Second even between the few forums that currently exist, flow of information is helpful. Third I am sure this is not the last forum created by people who are unsatisfied with other websites for whatever reason. So e can go collect forums that eventually grow to our list.

I didn't say it was a bad idea, just I'm not sure whether it will be of much use in forseeable future. There's no reason not to try it.
