Ora. besides there appearance and being a part of the clade of varanids that dominated and surpressed mammalian predators in australia, they have very interesting behavior and are very smart, much more so than most people give them credit for.

Extinct:
Dromaeosauridae members, they were my favorite dinosaurs since I became a dinosaur fan. Basically because of some books and because of Dinosaur Planet.
Extant:
Sharks, especially hammerheads (also because of documentaries I have watched when I was small).

Dromaeosaurids and Birds of prey
Dromaeosaurids because they had an awesome way of hunting (RPR) and they had some serious weapons and look plain awesome
BOP because I love how they are powerful killers from the skies and love their hunting prowess. Plus they just look damn amazing.

Crocodilians, specifically crocodiles are both my favorite group of extinct and extant animals due to their power, adaptability, and physical appearance.
At least lizards don't their asses beat by chickens. XD

Allosaurus(all species)
It is very successful, dominated the predatory niches at the time, fast, powerful, has a deadly biting mechanism, can kill a wide variety of prey
As for extant, I would say crocodiles
