Anyone seen or heard anything like this...
The Snake that caught the Secretary Bird near Gemsbok.
I was on my way back home from Tented Camp to Hermanus , when I passed a Secretary Bird standing in the tall grass in the river bed looking slightly akward. I stopped and with the binoculars I could see that a snake was wrapped around the neck of the Secretary Bird in such a way that it was strangling the Bird and the Bird could not get hold of it with its beak. Unfortunately I was photographing directly into the morning sun, so the quality is not what I had hope for.
It was clear that the Secretary Bird was in deep trouble and that the snake was suffocating it. I found it quite difficult to look at the Bird as it was realy looking at me with those big soft eyes for help. At one stage the Secretary Bird called loudly for help. When I left, the Secretary Bird's head was hanging and it was clearly starting to loose the struggle.
I am not a Snake expert but my best guess is that this was a Green Grass Snake or a Mole Snake, but it wil be very interesting to see what the snake experts will come up with. Did anybody els perhaps also saw this sightings as I had to leave and would like to know what had happened in the end.

A subadult female jaguar was once killed by collared peccaries (Scognamillo et al., 2003).

Collared peccary and capybara are group-living species. It is recognized that preying on group-living species may result in higher risk of injury to the predator (Sunquist & Sunquist, 1989; Huggard, 1993) leading the predators to avoid these species. An example of this risk is the fact that a sub-adult female jaguar (JF3) was killed by collared peccaries. However, the high association of capybara with water holes and collared peccary with particular patches (Polisar, 2000) seems to increase their detection and vulnerability to being selected by jaguars. The selectivity for these two prey species suggests that jaguars are making foraging decisions on the basis of energy gain and not on injury risk (Sunquist & Sunquist, 1989; Huggard, 1993; Scheel, 1993). The low density of white-lipped peccary (see Polisar, 2000) may be contributing to the difference in the level of predation upon this species.

Another incident from some time between 2001 and 2008 (at the time this was written in 2008, Project CAT was in its seventh year).

During the course of Project CAT, scientists have received mortality signals from cougar GPS collars. On one such occasion, efforts were made to locate and recover the cougar’s body. Students working alongside trained wildlife biologists participated in the recovery and determined that the cougar had probably been fatally kicked while stalking an elk. Using a domestic cat skeleton as a model, students reassembled the cougar’s skeleton, and now use it in their Cougar Wise presentations.

^Wonder how cervid hooves compare to horse hooves.

Studies I read have suggeste that zebras are far more formidable than wildebeests so I was under the impression that equines had hooves that were especially suited for blunt trauma.

Studies I read have suggeste that zebras are far more formidable than wildebeests so I was under the impression that equines had hooves that were especially suited for blunt trauma.

I've gotten that impression too from what other people have told me, and to be honest, I still think that's generally the case (although, there are deer and antelope species that I think are more fighty than the others). Although, maybe it boils down more to behavior than anything else.
