Toughest contest would by the hyena, for sure, but the mastiff might also create some risks. I can't recall how it would compare in size to an average cougar, but mastiffs are better guard dogs than fighters. I agree, cougar clears it after very close contest with hyena.

Yes, I should't have discounted the wolf, they'd be very dangerous, especially massive timber wolves. Not so sure about hippo, can't say I've studied the pygmy in great detail...
Wolf more dangerous than mastiff for sure. I think I accidentally overlooked it initially...

I'd say it stops at the pygmy hippo. It's 4 times bigger and has very deadly jaws.

Oh it's that much bigger. I'll keep my vote for now, but will have to think about it more and study the hippo. Any accounts of how it handles predators? Do single lions or leopards take it down?

I'll see if I can find any accounts, but going by hippo-lion interactions, I don't think leopards would find them as easy prey.

Care to explain how? cougars take down things heavier than a pygmy hippo for instance cougar eats bull moose cougar eats deer -that is as heavy as a pygmy hippo i think these are all clear examples of why a cougar can beat a pygmy hippo

^No, they're not. Deer do not have the robust build, deadly jaws, and durability of a pygmy hippo. In fact they're better suited to run than fight.

No, that isn't what I'm saying. I'm saying the pygmy hippo would win because it is robust, durable, over 3 times bigger, and very well-armed. Heck, even a same-sized pygmy hippo would have a very good chance. Also, mountain lions have no experience with pygmy hippos, who have experience with similar leopards. Not to mention a moose and a hippo have very little in common.
